Posted on

Welcome to Day 29 of the 2012 April Write – the Poets Jubilee Olympiad.

Today is our 5th and Final Free Verse day of the April Write for this year, and it means it’s your last chance to write a poem on whatever topic you want.

On our last Free Verse Day of the April Write, let out what you have been holding back this month.

Watch the video to hear my penultimate piece of the April Write. Enjoy.

  1. “THE SQUARE”

    Sitting in the square
    Watching the world go by
    Others watching me, watching them
Buses rolling through on fat tyres
    Passengers alighting and disembarking
    Walkers, runners, drivers and riders
    Smokers and drinkers
    All on their way home
    Or on their way out
To meet, to greet, to socialise
The man at the town hall
Grabbing a quick fag before he heads home
Perhaps to the wife who thinks he’s quit
    The lady all in black
Walking her black shaggy haired scotch terriers
    The loved up couple
Maybe coming out of the hall
Having put in their papers to get married in the summer
    Bus after bus stops
At one point there are five
Waiting there like pretty red maids all in a row
A mass of people exit one
And in moments they have disappeared
    Into their different directions
    One man catches my eye
Maybe it’s the artisan cake box
I can see is weighing him down
Is he on his way home to surprise his lady,
With a birthday cake he’s gonna tell her he baked?
    Who knows?
Theses are just my own stories I tell
    To explain what I see
    As everyone continues their journey
    Walking right past me.

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED

    CHARGING CHARGING CHARGING
IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT
    CHARGING CHARGING CHARGING
    SCREAMING OUT IN FRIGHT

    BEATING BEATING BEATING
    HOOVES SOUNDING CLOSER
    BEATING BEATING BEATING
    HEART THUMPING HARDER

    RUNNING RUNNING RUNNING
    DESPERATE AND DISTRAUGHT
    RUNNING RUNNING RUNNING
BUT THE BATTLE MUST BE FOUGHT

    STANDING STANDING STANDING
    WE CANNOT BE REMOVED
    STANDING STANDING STANDING
    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED

    BEAUTIFUL STRONG WOMEN
    *Your Strength Lies Within*

    The strength of a woman
isn’t seen in her face or her cheeks
It’s seen in the length of her arms
that embraces you within her reach

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in the high tones of her voice
It’s in her soft sweet loving undertones,
which gives your soul a hoist

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in all of the words she speaks.
It’s in all the wonderful ways,
    her word she keeps

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in all of the friends she has
It’s how great of a friend she is to others
and the children she comes in contact

    The strength of a woman
isn’t how much she’s admired and respected at work
It’s in how much she’s admired and respected at home
She loves and nurtures, even when treated like a jerk

    The strength of a woman
isn’t how tough she can be when she needs to discipline
It’s how gentle and disciplined she is
by the love she gives and has within

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in the physical beauty of her flesh
    It’s in her beautiful loving heart . . .
    that lies within her chest.

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in how many men she’s ever loved
It’s in whether she can be true and faithful
to the ONE man she’s trying to love.

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in the large objects or weights she can lift
It’s in the burdens of others, including hers
that she’s able to carry and some, makeshift.

    The strength of a woman
isn’t in how many people she loves
It’s in the understanding that the love she gives others
    is purely unconditional

A strong woman puts God first,
    family second,
    her work third,

    My beautiful strong sisters
*Your strength lies within your exquisite sweet spirit*

You shed those tears, as you’re full of fears
    Just know that God hears

    Keep your faith in Him

    When the impossible seems unattainable
and you’re hanging in the balance
Keep holding on and praising God
    Stay in your spiritual trance

I love you and honor you
    Beautiful Strong Women
